Anders took Scott and I on a hike in the Waikamoi Preserve reserve. It is right outside the entrance to Haleakala National Park. This area accesses a native Hawaiian forest. The first part of the hike is through a lot of non-native trees and flowers.

Scott and Anders heading down the trail

Mushrooms on the forest floor.

Small flowering plant.

Carving in a fallen log.

Close-up of pine bough.

Lichen is all over the forest.

Colorful ferns.

The moisture in the forest allows for all kind of growth on all surfaces.

View of trail through the invasive species forest.

Patch of moss and lichen that marks the border of the native Hawaiian forest.

This forest is a little more tropical-looking.

This was a wonderful spot to stop and listen. Lots of singing birds in this part of the woods.

Lichen and moss on a tree limb.

Anders points out to Scott some local bird and plant species.

Nice shot of the native forest.
