Volcan Arenal, Jan 2006

We stopped to check out Arenal Lake on our way to Volcan Arenal. The ride took most of the day, but we saw some incredible scenery from the ocean up into the mountains. We had great weather for the trip. The lake is known for the best wind-surfing conditions in the world.

The roads around the lake are full of pot holes and recent mud slides. What looked like a 30-minute ride on the map took almost 2.5 hours to complete!

Jeff, Donna, Karin & Scott prepare for the first adventure in Arenal, a canopy tour!

This is a lot of fun! After a safety talk and double-checking of our gear, we are ready to go. You climb up to a platform and they hook you onto a line and send you zipping through the tree tops. The first couple runs are fairly level to give you a feel for what you are doing then, when you've got the basics down (that means stopping without slamming into a tree) you hit the steep runs. What a rush!

It rained the whole time we were in Arenal, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the canopy tour or a hike around the volcano. We didn't see the lava flowing since there was total cloud cover everywhere, but then the locals let us know they don't see it very often either.

There were plenty of flowers and a jungle trail at our hotel in Arenal. The hotel had a tilapia farm, which attracted the snowy egrets for a free lunch.
