Africa 2006

Little Vumbura
Morning Safari
Notes:
Sadly, this is our last day on safari. After lunch we have to head for home. No big deal - just four flights and we'll be back in our own beds (sometime tomorrow).
What we saw:
- African Fish Eagle
- Ground Hornbill
- Lion
- Sable Antelope
- Water Buck

I don't know what kind of spiders built this web, but every morning when the dew was still visible you could see that this was a cluster of several cup-shaped webs. Once the dew dried up you couldn't see the cups anymore, and it looked more like a random mess of webbing. |

Below, a pair of ground hornbill. Below right, a pair of black-backed jackals pause briefly to see what we are doing. |

We came across two brother lions sleeping. They had recently finished a large meal (you could see their bellies bulge when they stood up).
The lion's paws are proportionately larger than the other cat species that we have seen. |

This really was one of our best vacations! We saw some incredible animals, met some amazing people and traveled to a continent that we had not explored yet. This a fabulous place, and one that I hope we make it back to in our lifetime.
If you enjoy traveling you should add this to your list of places to see. Africa is growing quickly, and animal migration routes are being impacted. I hope that the things that we have seen will be available for many generations to come. |
Thanks so much for your contributions (photos, proofing and editing) to the building of this site:
Jeff Gold, Donna Mancuso, Candy and Karl Jens, and Scott Wilson. |
