Victoria Falls, River Tour on the Zambezi River

Notes:

There are plenty of activities to choose from in Victoria Falls. The river tour proved to be almost as much fun as a safari ride.

What we saw:

  • African Skimmer
  • Cattle Egret
  • Crocodile
  • Darter
  • Egyptian Geese
  • Hippo
  • Monitor Lizard
  • Open-Mouth Stork
  • Steenbok
  • White-breasted Cormorant

After giving everyone a safety talk, our captain got down to business and made some incredible gin and tonics. This was a pretty cool happy hour. We saw more animals than I expected to see.

Below, a baby crocodile sunbathes in the last rays of the afternoon.

Above, a white-breasted cormorant dries its wings. When we get too close, it flies off to a less busy spot on the river.

Below, we came upon a large bloat of hippos. They appear to be so shy as we approach. Sometimes just their eyes and ears just barely clear the water as they look around. The male "yawns" to let you know that this is his pool and you've come close enough. They can't swim, so as long as you are in deeper water than they can walk you are safe.

Above, a steenbok seems to wonder who we are.

Left, Egyptian geese.

Below, an open-mouth stork hunts for snails. The grass seems a little tall for walking in!

Above and left, the monitor lizard blends right into the grass. They like to eat the eggs of birds and crocodiles.

Below, african skimmer, named for it's low flight over water - skimming the surface to catch fish.

Shortly before sunset a faint rainbow shows up on the mist from the falls. Below, the sun sets behind Scott. A perfect ending for another perfect day in Africa.

We don't have any photos of this, but we had a wonderful dinner at the Ngoma Zanga. They serve traditional Zambian fare while local warriors put on a show with dancing and singing. The waitreses wear traditional costumes, and a cooking brazier is placed by the table. The cooking is done back in the kitchen, but on a cool night the brazier is a nice touch. Some of the local vegetables are a little bitter, but the fried bream (a local fish) is just incredible. We all enjoyed the Ngoma Zanga very much.
