Elephant Plains
Evening Drive

Notes:

Elephant Plains has private suites set up in individual buildings. All the suites have a great view facing an area with a large clearing. It makes for great animal viewing from your room.

What we saw:

  • Bush Baby
  • Cape Buffalo
  • Elephant
  • Giraffe
  • Hyena
  • Vultures
  • Zebra

There isn't anything that looks more out of place in the landscape than a giraffe. They are so tall and awkward-looking, but they have such grace when they move. Then they return to awkward as they bend down to drink.

A giraffe's spots will darken as he ages.

It is amazing how quietly an elephant can move through the forest. They use their trunks to strip leaves off the trees and then stuff them in their mouths. An elephant's ears are very thin and get torn up as they walk through the forest. The holes and jagged edges are unique to each elephant; the guides and trackers use these markings to tell the animals apart.

cape buffalo
This is probably the same herd of cape buffalo that we saw yesterday. They eat constantly and move forward as they go. All you can hear is chewing and shuffling. They're like a bunch of cows - only meaner looking!

Looks like Scott and Donna are already anticipating the next sundowner!

Right, vultures are a sure sign there is a kill nearby, but we didn't find it.

Below, our group and guides: Karin, Wayne 2, Jeff, Prince, Wayne, Karl, Scott and Donna.

Another beautiful sunset in South Africa. Below left, a bush baby ran off too fast to catch his face. Below right, a hyena comes by for a closer look at our sundowner party. Turns out they are quite skittish. They are so mean-looking we're going to give them all the space they need! sunset
