Looking to “green-up” your marketing?

You want to have the best-looking brochures in town, but you’re concerned about the planet. What are your options? Here are a few first steps to “going green” with your marketing:

  1. Reduce unwanted mailers, by keeping your mailing list as up-to-date as possible. A local mailing house can run your mailing list against the postal service’s list of deliverable addresses for a minimal fee. This can help clean up undeliverable addresses, and prevent more mailers from being thrown away.

You should also check to be sure your mailing list doesn’t include duplicates.

  2. Consider reducing the size of your mailers, to use less paper in your mailing programs. You may also be able to reduce the number of pages, and print on lighter-weight paper – saving you money, and saving paper consumption. Using less paper means using less energy in manufacturing, and less trucking.

  3. Use post-consumer (look for a minimum of 30% post-consumer material) or de-inked recycled paper for your marketing materials and mailers. Consider either: a) unbleached paper, which involves the least environmental impact, as bleaching produces harmful gases; or b) Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) paper, recycled paper made without the use of chlorine.

  4. You can also look for paper produced from forests that are sustainably managed. Ask for FSC- and/or SFI-certified paper. (FSC and SFI are two popular forest and paper certification programs.)

  5. Look for printers that use inks that are low in volatile organic compound emissions. Printers can print with soy inks or other vegetable-oil-based inks.

Recycled paper is going mainstream! The two business cards also show getting more mileage from a design with unusual folds and design layout. The bottom card gets four designs out of one print run.
