Package your direct mail for maximum impact

You know how important first impressions are when you meet someone. It’s the same with your direct mail piece – the envelope delivers the critical first impression to your prospects and customers. Are you using a plain white #10 envelope – and hoping to attract attention?

  • Try dressing up the package with colored or see-through envelopes.
  • Use a headline on your envelope. Consider a “teaser” line or some other intriguing question or statement to encourage people to open it!
  • Use graphics or photos to attract attention to the mail.

And consider sizes other than the basic #10. For example:

  • The smaller #7 ¾ or “monarch” envelope (3 7/8” x 7 ½”) is more unusual, and has worked well for a variety of product and service offers.
  • A smaller “invitation” size envelope can be very effective in cutting through the clutter – even to senior executives!
  • The popular 6 1/8” x 11 1/2” envelope is the largest size you can mail and still qualify for the lowest postage rate (one reason it’s such a popular size).
  • A larger 9” x 12” envelope also has a high “open” rate, and can be highly effective for higher-margin products and services.

We can help you experiment with unusual sizes of mailers to help you cut through the clutter and get your audience to pay attention. (You’ll get the lowest postage rates, though, with mailers that are rectangular. How to know you’re in compliance? Take the width divided by the height of your mailer. If it equals a number between 1.3 and 2.5, you’re okay.)

Above are examples of a couple envelope treatments. At the top a transparent envelope allows a full color brochure to show through - giving us a peek at the content (image shows brochure both in and out of the envelope). This allows for a very colorful effect without printing the envelope.
At the bottom is an envelope with a graphic and message printed on the front. The graphic and messaging are used throughout the piece - further reinforcing the branding and messaging.
