March 2010

So, you’ve decided to work with a photographer on your next project.  Good for you! Now what?

We asked local photographer Tom Henderson of Tom Henderson Studio to share some insights with us.

The first step is to be as specific as possible about what you want to shoot and how you want it to look. Working with a designer is a great place to begin! This assures that the whole concept behind the shoot will reinforce your branding and the look that your company wants to portray. Is the look high tech? Warm and romantic? Gritty and macho? It’s best to work that out long before you get to the studio. If you don’t have a designer, you’ll have to come up with the concepts on your own.

Clients frequently ask “How much can we get done in a day?” That varies a great deal and depends on the project. Many times I have spent an entire day working on a single image. But those projects included set construction, lighting, styling and lots of tweaking. On the other hand, when shooting items that are all very similar, I have been able to shoot 150 products in half a day! That’s why all projects get bid individually – there’s just too much possible variation.

All this ties directly to the question “How much will it cost?” Again, depending on the scope, prices can start at a few hundred dollars and go up from there. The good news is that budgets are discussed before hand so there are no surprises! In some cases you can even get your very own custom shoot for the same amount you might pay for garden variety stock images.

And then -- “How long will it take?” Timetables are often tight these days. You probably won’t be able to leave the shoot with a disc, but it should be available within a day or two after the completion of photography.

TomSo, with good preparation, reasonable expectations, and firm grasp of the budget, you should be well armed to get exactly the images you need to attract new customers and enhance your bottom line!
